State-wise Rice Productivity Analysis |
State : Kerala |
Rice is cultivated in 14 districts of Kerala. Out of which 3 districts are under high productivity group (yield more than 2,500 kg/ha). Triennium average area of high productivity group comprising of three districts was 0.57 lakh hectares, which was 16.3% of triennium average area (3.49 lakh hectares) under rice in the State. Triennium average production was 1.50 lakh tonnes, which was 20.1% of triennium average production (7.45 lakh tonnes) of rice in the State. Triennium average productivity of high productivity group comprising of three districts was 2,632 kg/ha as against 2,133 kg/ha triennium average productivity of the State.
Triennium average area of medium productivity group (yield 2,000-2,500 kg/ha) comprising of 5 districts was 1.81 lakh hectares which was 51.8% of triennium average area (3.49 lakh hectares.) under rice in the state. Triennium average production was 3.95 lakh tonnes, which was 53% of average triennium production (7.45 lakh tonnes) of rice in the State. Triennium average productivity of medium productivity group comprising of 5 districts was 2,182 kg/ha as against 2,133 kg/ha triennium average productivity of the State.
Triennium average area of medium-low productivity group (yield 1,500-2,000 kg/ha) comprising of 5 districts was 1.05 lakh hectares, which was 30% of triennium average area (3.49 lakh hectares) under rice in the State. Triennium average production was 1.92 lakh tonnes, which was 25.7% triennium average production (7.45 lakh tonnes) of rice in the state. Triennium average productivity of medium-low productivity group comprising of 5 districts was 1,829 kg/ha as against 2,133 kg/ha triennium average productivity of the state.
Triennium average area of low productivity group (yield 1,000-1,500 kg/ha) in one district was 0.065 lakh hectares, which was 1.9% of triennium average area (3.49 lakh hectares) under rice in the State. Triennium average production was 0.085 lakh tonnes, which was 1.1% of triennium average production (7.45 lakh tonnes) of rice in the State. Triennium average productivity of medium-low productivity group in one district was 1,308 kg/ha as against 2,133 kg/ha triennium average productivity of the State.
More than 50% rice area in Kerala is concentrated in medium productivity group and it accounts for more than 50% of total rice production in the State. The productivity of medium productivity group is 2,182 kg/ha, which is about 12% higher than the national triennium average productivity of 1,947 kg/ha. In fact, State's average productivity of 2,133 kg/ha is also higher than the national triennium average productivity.
Area, production and productivity of rice under different productivity groups in Kerala during triennium ending 2000-2001 are given in Table-11.
