State-wise Rice Productivity Analysis

State : Maharashtra

Latest three years data pertaining to area, production and productivity of rice in Maharashtra are not available due to formation of some new districts, hence two years data, that is, 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 are pooled together to arrive at biennial average of area, production and productivity and biennial average data, thus worked out have been used here for analysis.

Rice is cultivated in 32 districts of Maharashtra. There is no high productivity area in Maharashtra. Five districts are under medium productivity group (yield 2,000-2,500 kg/ha). Biennial average area of medium productivity group comprising of five districts was 4.18 lakh hectares, which was 27.6% of biennial average area (15.17 lakh hectares) under rice in the State. Biennial average production was 9.71 lakh tonnes, which was 43.3% of biennial average production (22.45 lakh tonnes) of rice in the State. Biennial average productivity of medium productivity group comprising of five districts was 2,323 kg/ha as against 1,480 kg/ha biennial average productivity of the State.

Biennial average area of medium-low productivity (yield 1,500-2,000 kg/ha) in one district was 1.42 lakh hectares, which was 9.3% of biennial average area (15.17 lakh hectares) under rice in the State. Biennial average production was 2.39 lakh tonnes, which was 10.6% of biennial average production (22.45 lakh tonnes) of rice in the State. Biennial average productivity of medium-low productivity group in one district was 1,683 kg/ha as against 1,480 kg/ha biennial average productivity of the State.

Biennial average area of low productivity group (yield 1,000-1,500 kg/ha) comprising of 11 districts was 8.21 lakh hectares, which was 54.1% of biennial average area (15.17 lakh hectares) under rice in the state. Biennial average production was 9.59 lakh tonnes, which was 42.7% of biennial average production (22.45 lakh tonnes) of rice in the State. Biennial average productivity of medium-low productivity group comprising of 11 districts was 1,168 kg/ha as against 1,480 kg/ha biennial average productivity of the State.

Biennial average area of very low productivity group (yield below 1,000 kg/ha) comprising of 15 districts was 1.36 lakh hectares, which was 9% of biennial average area (15.17 lakh hectares) under rice in the State. Biennial average production was 0.76 lakh tonnes, which was 3.4% of biennial average production (22.45 lakh tonnes) of rice in the State. Biennial average productivity of very low productivity group comprising of 15 districts was 559 kg/ha as against 1,480 kg/ha biennial average productivity of the State.

Average productivity of rice in Maharashtra is poor. More than 50% of total area under rice in the State is concentrated in low productivity group, which accounts for about 42% of total rice production in the State. Biennial average productivity of the State is 1,480 kg/ha, which is about 24% below the national biennial average productivity of 1,950 kg/ha.

Area, production and productivity of rice under different Biennial productivity groups in Maharashtra during biennial ending 2000-2001 are given in Table-13.
