State-wise Rice Productivity Analysis |
State : Orissa |
Rice is cultivated in 30 districts of Orissa. Out of which 3 districts are in medium-low productivity group, 17 districts are in low productivity group and 10 districts are in very low productivity group. Triennium average area of medium-low productivity group (yield 1,500-2,000 kg/ha) comprising of 3 districts was 4.45 lakh hectares, which was 9.9% of triennium average area (44.93 lakh hectares) under rice in the State. Triennium average production was 7.29 lakh tonnes, which was 14.4% of triennium average production (50.52 lakh tonnes) of rice in the State. Triennium average productivity of medium-low productivity group comprising of 3 districts was 1,638 kg/ha as against 1,124 kg/ha triennium average productivity of the State.
Triennium average area of low productivity group (yield 1,000-1,500 kg/ha) comprising of 17 districts was 26.42 lakh hectares, which was 58.8% of triennium average area (44.93 lakh hectares) under rice in the State. Triennium average production was 31.28 lakh tonnes, which was 61.9% of triennium average production (50.52 lakh tonnes) of rice in the State. Triennium average productivity of low productivity group comprising of 17 districts was 1,184 kg/ha as against 1,124 kg/ha triennium average productivity of the State.
Triennium average area of very low productivity group (yield below 1,000 kg/ha) comprising of 10 districts was 14.06 lakh hectares, which was 31.3% of triennium average area (44.93 lakh hectares) under rice in the State. Triennium average production was 11.95 lakh tonnes, which was 23.7% of triennium average production (50.52 lakh tonnes) of rice in the state. Triennium average productivity of very low productivity group comprising of 10 districts was 850 kg/ha as against 1,124 kg/ha triennium average productivity of the State.
Rice is cultivated in Orissa substantially on large area. About 90% of total area under rice in the State is concentrated in low and very low productivity groups. Therefore, total production of rice in the State is considerably low as compared to area under rice. High and medium productivity groups do not exist in the State. Triennium average productivity of the State is 1,124 kg/ha which is about 42% less than the national triennium average productivity of 1,947 kg/ha.
Area, production and productivity of rice under different productivity groups in Orissa during triennium ending 2000-2001 are given in Table-18.
