State-wise Rice Productivity Analysis

State : Rajasthan

Rice is cultivated in 18 districts of Rajasthan. Out of which one district falls under medium productivity group one district is under medium low productivity group, 11 districts are under low productivity group and 5 districts are under very low productivity group. Triennium average area of medium productivity group (2000-2500 kg/ha) in one district was 0.339 lakh hectares, which was 19% of triennium average area (1.78 lakh hectares) under rice in the State. Triennium average production was 0.790 lakh tonnes, which was 38.6% of triennium average production (2.05 lakh tonnes) of rice in the State. Triennium average productivity of medium productivity group in one district was 2,330 kg/ha as against 1,149 kg/ha triennium average productivity of the State.

Triennium average area of medium-low productivity group yield (1,500-2,000 kg/ha) in one district was 0.054 lakh hectares, which was 3% of triennium average area (1.78 lakh hectares) under rice in the State. Triennium average production was 0.093 lakh tonnes, which was 4.5% of triennium average production (2.05 lakh tonnes) of rice in the State. Triennium average productivity of medium-low productivity group in one district was 1,722 kg/ha as against 1,149 kg/ha triennium average productivity of the State.

Triennium average area of low productivity group (yield 1,000-1,500 kg/ha) comprising of 11 districts was 0.65 lakh hectares, which was 36.6% of triennium average productivity of the State. Triennium average production was 0.775 lakh tonnes, which was 37.9% of triennium average production (2.05 lakh tonnes) of rice in the State. Triennium average productivity of low productivity group comprising of 11 districts was 1,187 kg/ha as against 1,149 kg/ha triennium average productivity of the State.

Triennium average of very low productivity group (yield below 1,000 kg/ha) comprising of 5 districts was 0.736 lakh hectares, which was 41.3% of triennium average area (1.78 lakh hectares) under rice in the State. Triennium average production was 0.389 lakh tonnes, which was 19% of triennium average production (2.05 lakh tonnes) of rice in the State. Triennium average productivity of very low productivity group comprising of 5 districts was 529 kg/ha as against 1,149 kg/ha triennium average productivity of the State.

Rice is cultivated in Rajasthan on small area. About 78% of total area under rice in the State is concentrated in low and very low productivity groups. Triennium average productivity of the State is 1,149 kg/ha, which is much below the national triennium average productivity of 1,947 kg/ha. The low yield is probably contributed due to adoption of old traditional varieties and lack of irrigation facilities. The coverage under high yielding varieties is less than 30% and irrigated area is about 50% in the State.

Area, production and productivity of rice under different productivity groups in Rajasthan during triennium ending 2000-2001 are given in Table-20.
