State-wise Rice Productivity Analysis |
State : Sikkim |
Rice is cultivated in 4 districts of Sikkim. Out of which one district falls under medium-low productivity group and 3 districts are under low productivity group. Triennium average area of medium low productivity group (yield 1,500-2,000 kg/ha) in one district was 0.065 lakh hectares, which was 41.4% of triennium average area (0.16 lakh hectares) under rice in the State. Triennium average production was 0.10 lakh tonnes, which was 44.8% of triennium average production (0.22 lakh tonnes) of rice in the State. Triennium average productivity of medium-low productivity group in one district was 1,538 kg/ha as against 1,420 kg/ha triennium average productivity of the State.
Triennium average area of low productivity group (yield 1,000-1,500 kg/ha) comprising of 3 districts was 0.092 lakh hectares, which was 58.6% of triennium average area (0.16 lakh hectares) under rice in the State. Triennium average production was 0.123 lakh tonnes, which was 55.2% of triennium average production(0.22 lakh tonnes) of rice in the State. Triennium average productivity of low productivity group comprising of 3 districts was 1,337 kg/ha as against 1,420 kg/ha triennium average productivity of the State.
Rice area in Sikkim is very small and about 59% of total area under rice in the State is concentrated in low productivity group. In fact, in Sikkim rice cultivation is done 100% under irrigated condition, even though productivity is very poor. It is perhaps, cultivators are still growing old traditional varieties. The coverage under high yielding varieties is less than 45%. Triennium average productivity of the State is 1,420 kg/ha as against 1,947 kg/ha triennium average productivity of the country.
Area, production and productivity of rice under different productivity groups in Sikkim during triennium ending 2000-2001 are given in Table-21.
