State-wise Rice Productivity Analysis

State : Jharkhand

Latest three years data on area, production and productivity of rice pertaining to Jharkhand State are not available due to bifurcation from Bihar as a new State. Hence, triennium average could not be worked out and one year, i.e., 1998-99 data on area, production and productivity of rice have been used for analysis.

Rice is cultivated in 18 districts of Jharkhand. Out of which one district is under medium-low productivity group, 10 districts are under low productivity group and 7 districts are under very low productivity group. Rice area of one district under medium-low productivity group during 1998-99 was 0.337 lakh hectares, which was 2.3% of total area (14.48 lakh hectares) under rice in the State and production was 0.534 lakh tonnes, which was 3.6% of total production of rice in the State. Productivity of one district under medium-low productivity group during 1998-99 was 1,585 kg/ha as against 1,021 kg/ha average productivity of the State.

Total area of 10 districts under low productivity group during 1998-99 was 6.82 lakh hectares, which was 47.1% of total area (14.48 lakh hectares) under rice in the State and production was 8.52 lakh tonnes, which was 57.6% of total production of rice in the State. Average productivity of low productivity group comprising of 10 districts during 1998-99 was 1,249 kg/ha as against 1,021 kg/ha average productivity of the State.

Total area of 7 districts under very low productivity group during 1998-99 was 7.32 lakh hectares, which was 50.6% of total area of the State and production was 5.73 lakh tonnes, which was 38.8% of total production of rice in the State. Average productivity of very low productivity group comprising of 7 districts during 1998-99 was 783 kg/ha as against average productivity (1,021 kg/ha) of the State.

More than 50% of total area under rice in the State is concentrated in very low productivity group. High and medium productivity groups do not exist in the State. Average productivity of the State is 1,021 kg/ha which is very much below the national average.

Area, production and productivity of rice under different productivity groups in Jharkhand during 1998-99 are given in Table-26.
