State-wise Rice Productivity Analysis |
State : Madhya Pradesh |
In case of Madhya Pradesh, latest three years data pertaining to area, production and productivity of rice are not available due to formation of new state of Chhattisgarh, hence two years data, that is, 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 are pooled together to arrive at biennial average of area, production and productivity and biennial average data thus worked out have been used here for analysis.
In Madhya Pradesh, rice is cultivated in 41 districts. Out of which 2 districts are under medium productivity group (yield 2,000-2,500 kg/ha). There is no area/district under high productivity group in Madhya Pradesh. Biennial average area of medium productivity group comprising of two districts was 0.35 lakh hectares, which was 2.1% of biennial average area (16.54 lakh hectares) under rice in the State. Biennial average production was 0.78 lakh tonnes, which was 5.9% of biennial average production (13.13 lakh tonnes) of rice in the State. Biennial average productivity of medium productivity group comprising of two districts was 2,229 kg/ha as against 794 kg/ha biennial average productivity of the State.
Biennial average area of medium-low productivity group (yield 1,500-2,000 kg/ha) comprising of two districts was 0.18 lakh hectares, which was 1.1% of biennial average area (16.54 lakh hectares) under rice in the State. Biennial average production was 0.31 lakh tonnes, which was 2.4% of biennial average production (13.13 lakh tonnes) of rice in the State. Biennial average productivity of medium-low productivity group comprising of two districts was 1,722 kg/ha as against 794 kg/ha biennial average productivity of the State.
Biennial average area of low productivity group (yield 1,000-1,500 kg/ha) comprising of six districts was 2.72 lakh hectares, which was 16.4% of biennial average area (16.54 lakh hectares) under rice in the State. Biennial average production was 3.04 lakh tonnes, which was 23.2% of biennial average production (13.13 lakh tonnes) of rice in the State. Biennial average productivity of low productivity group comprising of six districts was 1,118 kg/ha as against 794 kg/ha biennial average productivity of the State.
Biennial average area of very low productivity group (yield below 1,000 kg/ha) comprising of 31 districts was 13.29 lakh hectares, which was 80.4% of biennial average area (16.54 lakh hectares) under rice in the State. Biennial average production was 9.00 lakh tonnes, which was 68.5% of biennial average production (13.13 lakh tonnes) of rice in the State. Biennial average productivity of very low productivity group comprising of 31 districts was 677 kg/ha as against 794 kg/ha biennial average productivity of the state.
Productivity of rice in Madhya Pradesh is very poor. More than 80% of total area under rice in the State is concentrated in very low productivity group, which accounts for more than 65% of total rice production in the State. The productivity of very low productivity group is less than 700 kg/ha, which is much below the national biennial average productivity of 1,950 kg/ha. Similarly, State's average productivity of 794 kg/ha is also about 59% below the national biennial average productivity of 1,950 kg/ha.
Area, production and productivity of rice under different productivity groups in Madhya Pradesh during biennial ending 2000-2001 are given in Table-12.
