State-wise Rice Productivity Analysis

State : Nagaland

Rice is cultivated in 7 districts of Nagaland. Out of which 2 districts are in medium-low productivity group and 5 districts are in low productivity group. Triennium average area of medium-low productivity group (Yield 1,500-2,000 kg/ha) comprising of two districts was 0.54 lakh hectares, which was 36.2% of triennium average area (1.49 lakh hectares) under rice in the State. Triennium average production was 0.84 lakh tonnes, which was 38.2% of triennium average production (2.20 lakh tonnes) of rice in the State. Triennium average productivity of medium-low productivity group comprising of two districts was 1,556 kg/ha as against 1,477 kg/ha triennium average productivity of the State.

Triennium average area of low productivity group (yield 1,000-1,500 kg/ha) comprising of 5 districts was 0.95 lakh hectares, which was 63.8% triennium average area (1.49 lakh hectares) under rice in the State.

Triennium average production was 1.36 lakh tonnes, which was 61.8% of triennium average production (2.20 lakh tonnes) of rice in the State. Triennium average productivity of low productivity group comprising of five districts was 1,432 kg/ha as against 1,477 kg/ha triennium average productivity of the State.

About 64% of total area under rice in the State is concentrated in low productivity group, which accounts for about 62% of total rice production in the State. High and medium productivity groups are not existing in the State. Hence, the productivity of rice in Nagaland is considerably poor due to adoption of old and traditional varieties and also lack of irrigation facilities. The coverage under high yielding varieties is only 11% and area under irrigation is about 42% in the State. Triennium average productivity of the State is 1,477 kg/ha which is about 24% less than the national triennium average productivity of 1,947 kg/ha.

Area, production and productivity of rice under different productivity groups in Nagaland during triennium ending 2000-2001 are given in Table-17.
