Out of which 4 districts are under high productivity group, 9 districts are under medium productivity group, 3 districts are under medium-low productivity group and 2 districts are under low productivity group. Triennium average area of high productivity group comprising of 4 districts was 15.77 lakh hectares, which was 27% of triennium average area (58.30 lakh hectares) under rice in the State. Triennium average production was 43.10 lakh hectares, which was 32.7% of triennium average production (131.68 lakh tonnes ) of rice in the State. Triennium average productivity of high productivity group comprising of 4 districts was 2,733 kg/ha as against 2,259 kg/ha triennium average productivity of the State.
Triennium average area of medium productivity group (yield 2,000-2,500 kg/ha) comprising of 9 districts was 29.66 lakh hectares, which was 50.9% of triennium average area (58.30 lakh hectares) under rice in the State. Triennium average production was 67.14 lakh tonnes, which was 51% of triennium average production (131.68 lakh tonnes) of rice in the State. Triennium average productivity of medium productivity group comprising of 9 districts was 2,264 kg/ha as against 2,259 kg/ha triennium average productivity of the State.
Triennium average area of medium-low productivity group (yield 1,500-2,000 kg/ha) comprising of 3 districts was 9.97 lakh hectares, which was 17.1% of triennium average area (58.30 lakh hectares) under rice in the State. Triennium average production was 17.46 lakh tonnes, which was 13.3% of triennium average production(131.68 lakh tonnes) of rice in the State. Triennium average productivity of medium-low productivity group comprising of 3 districts was 1,751 kg/ha as against 2,259 kg/ha triennium average productivity of the State.
Triennium average area of low productivity group (yield 1,000-1,500 kg/ha) comprising of two districts was 2.90 lakh hectares, which was 5% of triennium average area (58.30 lakh hectares) under rice in the State. Triennium average production was 3.98 lakh tonnes, which was 3% of triennium average production (131.68 lakh tonnes) of rice in the State. Triennium average productivity of low productivity group comprising of 2 districts was 1,372 kg/ha as against 2,259 kg/ha triennium average productivity of the State.
West Bengal ranks first in area and production in the country. About 78% of total area under rice in the State is concentrated under high and medium productivity groups, which accounts for nearly 84% of total production of rice in the State. Area under high yielding varieties is nearly 85%. Triennium average productivity of the State is 2,259 kg/ha. as against 1,947 kg/ha triennium average productivity of the country.
Area, production and productivity of rice under different productivity groups in West Bengal during triennium ending 2000-2001 are given in Table-25.
