State-wise Rice Productivity Analysis

State : Chhattisgarh

Latest three years data on area, production and productivity of rice pertaining to Chhattisgarh were not available due to newly formation of this State. Hence, two years data, i.e., 1999-2000 & 2000-2001 were pooled together to arrive at biennial average of area, production and productivity and biennial average data thus worked out have been used here for analysis.

Rice is cultivated in 16 districts of Chhattisgarh. Out of which one district is under medium-low productivity group, 9 districts are in low productivity group and 6 districts are under very low productivity group . Biennial average area of medium-low productivity group (yield 1,500-2,000 kg/ha) in one district was 1.38 lakh hectares, which was 3.7% of biennial average area (37.46 lakh hectares) under rice in the State. Biennial average production was 2.31 lakh tonnes, which was 5.6% of biennial average production (41.44 lakh tonnes) of rice in the State. Biennial average productivity of medium-low productivity group comprising of one district was 1,674 kg/ha as against 1,106 kg/ha biennial average productivity of the State.

Biennial average area of low productivity group (yield 1,000-1,500 kg/ha) comprising of 9 districts was 19.38 lakh hectares, which was 51.7% of biennial average area (37.46 lakh hectares) under rice in the State. Biennial average production was 23.11 lakh tonnes, which was 55.8% of biennial average production (41.44 lakh tonnes) of rice in the State. Biennial average productivity of low productivity group comprising of 9 districts was 1,192 kg/ha as against 1,106 kg/ha biennial average productivity of the State.

Biennial average area of very low productivity group (yield below 1,000 kg/ha) comprising of 6 districts was 16.70 lakh hectares, which was 44.6% of biennial average area (37.46 lakh hectares) under rice in the State. Biennial average production was 16.02 lakh tonnes, which was 38.6% of biennial average production (41.44 lakh tonnes) of rice in the State. Biennial average productivity of very low productivity group comprising of 6 districts was 959 kg/ha as against 1,106 kg/ha biennial average productivity of the State.

About 96% of total area under rice in the State is concentrated in low and very low productivity groups of the State. Average productivity of the State is very poor. Biennial average productivity of rice in the State is 1,106 kg/ha which is very much below the national average.

Area, production and productivity of rice under different productivity groups in Chhattisgarh during biennial ending 2000-2001 are given in Table-27.
